Snapchat announced a huge upgrade last week: Tap To View!
We no longer have to press and hold the screen to view a Story or Snap — instead, simply Tap to View! This means no more sore thumbs while watching a 130s Story and it is kind of fun.
I believe in the short term, here are the 2 effects that we will see
1) More Engagement (Good)
It will be easier for users to consume content. We can watch the longer stories right away. No more “I will watch it later”
2) Divided Attention (Bad)
Snapchat may not have 100% its user’s attention during the content consumption. Now we may actually talk to our friends while “viewing” a Snap. This (divided attention) is what’s killing TV and other media platforms so watch out Snapchat!
Even though it’s risky, but I believe it is the right move. Snapchat is thinking about its users first and willing to give up on something that has made it popular.
